California Rest Areas Rules
Where Can I park at the rest area?
Only park in a designated parking place.
How long can I stay at a California rest area?
You may stay up to 8 hours in any 24-hour period.
May I walk my pet?
Walk your pet, as long as it is on a leash.
Where do I throw out litter?
Place your litter only in trash receptacles.
I need to empty my RV waste-holding tank.
You may empty sanitary wastes from RV holding tanks and portable devices at one of 20 California Rest Areas that have designated dump stations.
Can I use stoves at the rest area?
You may use small stoves and heaters (except on wood tables), if you do it safely.
I have a Non-Profit group activity that will correlate well at the rest stop.
Some nonprofit activities, with the Department of Transportation’s permission, are permissible. (The DOT’s permission does not indicate sponsorship).
Can I temporarily block any part of the rest area?
No blocking of vehicular or pedestrian traffic is allowed.
Can I camp at the rest area?
No camping or pitching of any type of tent is allowed.
Can I park and go on a hike?
No parking, to do something away from the rest area such as hike, camping or hunting is NOT allowed
Can I crank up my stereo?
Using a megaphone, loudspeaker, or other sound-amplifying device is NOT allowed
Can I tie into the rest area utilities?
NO use of the Department of Transportation’s water, electricity, or gas is allowed.
Can I sell stuff at the rest area?
You may NOT sell or publicize your private goods or services.
Can I paint on the walls?
Putting anything on walls or plants is NOT allowed.
