California Rest Areas are designed to provide highway travelers a safe and convenient facility to rest before continuing with their journey.

California Rest Stop Areas

California rest areas are typically roadside facilities that provide, at a minimum, parking. Although some many have picnic areas and restrooms. There are some that have even have Wi-Fi access, travel and visitor information and yes even RV dump station facilities, where RVers may empty their sewage holding tanks.

They are mainly maintained by the California Department of Transportation. (Caltrans). Some may be closed due to maintenance issues without notice, its always best to have an alternate rest stop just in case.

When traveling in the State of California, the Reno/Lake Tahoe, or the greater Las Vegas areas, try the toll-free voice activated phone service, 800.427.7623 (800.GAS.ROAD). This service is available free from any touch-tone, cellular or pay phone. Access the same information from all other areas outside of California by dialing 916.445.7623.

This information system provides current road conditions within the California State Highway System. The information provided covers incidents that cause significant delays to the normal flow of traffic including, but not limited to, full closures; 1-way traffic controls; lane closures; construction; maintenance projects and emergencies. Keep in mind that the following conditions will NOT be found in these reports: normal commute traffic, ramp closures and traffic flow conditions.

The information in each report is the latest information reported to the Highway Information Center. The center is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

California Vista Points

When on the road in the State of California and just need a quick break try a nearby California Vista Point. They’re awesome. These pullouts give motorists a chance to enjoy great views of California scenery where you can just park and relax a bit. (keep in mind that they do not include restrooms). The majority of California Vista points do have some limited facilities such as walkways, interpretive displays, railings, benches, interpretive information, trash receptacles, and monuments.
